Chapter 8

“Your daughter is an exceptional child, Mrs. Shapiro.”

Rose swallowed her smile and leaned back in her chair. Susan’s sixth-grade teacher had just uttered the words every parent yearned to hear at an end-of-year conference.

“Thank you,” Rose replied. “We think so, too.”

“I’m not speaking lightly, Mrs. Shapiro,” the teacher said as she opened a folder labeled Susan Rabinowitz—Classwork. She pointed to a book list.

“Susan has read every volume in the class library and half the ones in the school library. You sign her report cards so you know she’s a straight-A student. She does more than memorize, Mrs. Shapiro. She can think!”

“We’re very proud of her, Mrs. Hingers.” Why did the teacher sound so serious?

“If you and Mr. Shapiro agree, I can recommend her skipping a grade in junior high school. Next year she can start in the seventh grade, then jump to the ninth. No eighth grade at all.”

She respected Mrs. Hingers’s professional opinion, but skipping a whole year of school?

“I’m proud of her,” Rose repeated, “but it’s a big decision. I’ll have to discuss this at home.”

“Of course. You should know that there are several students for whom this recommendation will be made. She’d have some familiar faces with her both years.”

The teacher reached for an envelope in Susan’s folder. “I’ve hung some of the children’s essays on the bulletin board, but not the one in here.” She placed the package in Rose’s hand. “Father’s Day is coming soon, but don’t wait to give this to your husband. Tell him he’ll need a quiet place to read it.”

“All right,” said Rose, putting it carefully into her purse. “He’ll get it tonight.”
